The Foundations of Kung Fu by Grandmaster Jiang Yu Shan

August 26, 2025 by VAHVA Fitness

GM Jiang Yu Shan explains and demonstrates many key concepts that make the foundation of real internal Kung Fu.

What a lot of people don't know about the Kung Fu & Qigong Society is that it's a massive ecosystem of different ways of developing and strengthening the body.

Think of the Western system of athletic training: we have general strength & conditioning, mobility, breath work, rehab, sport specific strength work, physiotherapy etc.

Similarly, in the ancient times The Eastern traditions had everything as well, the only difference is that in some aspects they were a lot more developed than the modern Western counterparts.

For example, in the ancient times they developed the internal aspect of training to insanely high levels, like they did with breathwork, tendon strengthening and many other aspects such as rejuvenating the energy systems.

Qigong was training that was for every man and every woman, except what many people don't know that there are many types of Qigong from soft to hard, from internal to external and even types of Qigong for enlightenment & awakening purposes.

Qigong was not the only thing people practiced: the ancient East was also immensely rich in their martial styles.

Kung Fu or 功夫, gōngfū only meant “hard work” or “skill achieved through hard work and time.”.

In the ancient times, Kung Fu had everything: dozens of striking styles, grappling and even wrestling (nowadays called Shuai Jiao style). Some styles were more internal such as Xinyi Ba and some were more external such as the Tiger style.

Although there were purists, it made sense to know the key aspects of every style. Kung Fu used to be like MMA is today – mixed martial arts.

In order to become a complete martial artist, it doesn't make sense to just devote your entire life to boxing when there is Muay Thai, BJJ, Karate, wrestling and everything else.

That's why it has been delightful to learn from the grandmaster YuShan because although he is the grandmaster in the Monkey Style of Kung Fu, he is a living encyclopedia of Kung Fu in general.

He knows that no style is perfect: you need to know many styles in order have the complete system and to build the complete human being and fighter.

Although the world of Kung Fu & Qigong is vast and has depth beyond comparison, there are key fundamentals and aspects that make the biggest difference.

The packages we created with the grandmaster such as Health & Fighting Qigong, Internal & External Kung Fu, The Grand Circle and 24 Warrior Set are brilliant because they teach you Kung Fu & Qigong as complete systems.

Instead of needing to learn 20 different things from different sources, you can just learn what is inside in these packages.

Everything is connected to everything and everything supports each other. And this is the reality of real mastery: "how can you know the soft without knowing the hard?"
